Whinham nominated for young women’s footballer of the year award

Young Wellington Phoenix playmaker Alyssa Whinham has been recognised for her eye-catching performances in the Liberty A-League.

The 18-year-old has been named the young women’s footballer of the month for January.

After impressive showings off the bench in the opening two rounds, Whinham made her starting debut against Sydney FC on December 19 and has been a regular in Gemma Lewis’ first-choice XI ever since.

She started all four of the Phoenix’s matches in January, scoring one goal and creating another.

Whinham became the club’s second ever goal scorer when she found the back of the net against Brisbane Roar on January 16, but it was her priceless reaction which was even more memorable.

She turned provider in the Phoenix’s final match of the month against Perth Glory, sliding an inch-perfect pass through for Grace Jale, who beat the ‘keeper with a first-time shot.

As a result of being named the young footballer of the month for January Alyssa Whinham is nominated for the young women’s footballer of the year award.
