The Phoenix kick off their 2012/13 Hyundai A-League season against Sydney FC and Italian football superstar and World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero on Saturday night.
In what promises to be a huge evening of prime football entertainment, the Phoenix are looking to kick off their season at their fortress and bank three points against the A-League’s glamour club.
Phoenix General Manager David Dome says international interest in a game at Westpac Stadium has never been so high.
“We’ve never had so much international media attention. Fox Sports Australia are bringing their own commentary team for the match, and the match will be shonw live on Italian TV. It’s another great moment in the history of this football club”.
Phoenix captain Andrew Durante says that playing against Del Piero is a bit surreal but once the game starts it will be business as usual.
“He-s a football superstar and we all know what he can do. But he’s not going to stop us playing our game. We-re just going to play our normal game. It will be up to Manny (Muscat) to contain him.
“It’ll be a bit surreal to play against him. But once the whistle goes it’ll be down to business and he’ll be just another player.
“We haven-t spoken too much about what they do. We-re just focusing on what we do.”
The build up for the first home game of the season will start early with a huge pre game party planned for Queens Wharf followed by a March to the Stadium to the Stadium in time for kick off.
