The Wellington Phoenix are pushing hard for the inclusion of a reserve team in the national league, describing it as critical to the club’s future.

A lack of a reserve or youth team playing meaningful matches has been a major issue for the Phoenix since the A-League club’s inception in 2007.

Promising youngsters have nowhere to hone their skills, while players returning from injury are without a vehicle to regain match fitness.

But finally there could be a breakthrough, as New Zealand Football considers a proposal from the Phoenix to enter the national league.
