Wellington Phoenix will be looking to defend their Capital Cup title when they face Beijing BG in the return encounter of this season’s event.
Phoenix won the inaugural trophy when a sumptuous free-kick by Gui Finkler secured the visitors a 2-1 win in the Chinese capital in late July 2016.
Beijing BG now head to Wellington for the return fixture in what will be a highly anticipated affair at Westpac Stadium on Tuesday, 14 February 2017, kick-off 7pm.
The home side will be hoping to emulate the fine display they produced in China when the two sides meet on Valentine’s Day, but expect a tough contest against the Chinese League One side preparing for their upcoming campaign.
The Huawei Capital Cup celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the twin sister relationship between the Chinese and New Zealand capitals.
Wellington Mayor Justin Lester said the Huawei Capital Cup was an excellent demonstration of the way sport can bring cities from different countries together to facilitate cultural and business ties.
“This is going to be a great event, not just for football fans, but for all of Wellington as it helps promote our city to the world,” Lester said.
Phoenix General Manager David Dome said the event was a special occasion for the club.
“We had an extremely warm welcome when we played in Beijing in July and are looking forward to reciprocating when Beijing BG play here,” Dome said.
‘’Coming right at the end of Chinese New Year celebrations in Wellington it promises to be an extremely entertaining week culminating in this unique match.”
Wellington Phoenix members can attend the match for free. General Public can purchase tickets for just $10 for adults and $2.50 for juniors. Tickets can be purchased at ticketek.co.nz
