An opening day victory, a bumper crowd and even an A-League licence extension might be eluding the Wellington Phoenix but there’s no darkening their mood.

Coach Ernie Merrick set the tone again yesterday.

Perpetually cheerful, he had to remind himself that the Phoenix had lost 2-1 to the Perth Glory on Sunday, meaning he had to look stern in front of the cameras and microphones.

That doesn’t mean he or the team are kidding themselves about how sloppy the Glory defeat was.

Just that the club aren’t going to start slitting their wrists one week into the campaign.

“We’re very disappointed about letting our fans down,” Merrick said.

“First home game of the season and the expectation was high and we want that high expectation. But we’re very disappointed that we let them down,” he added.
