Brisbane Striker Trials With Phoenix

Brisbane Strikers goalscoring machine Matt Thurtell is the latest trialist to join up with the Wellington Phoenix.

Thurtell, 18, has netted at a rate of a goal-a-game for his club over the past two seasons, including 17 this term.

A member of the Brisbane Roar youth team last season, Thurtell trained with the Phoenix for the first time today.

He is one of several trialists the club has hosted over the past few weeks and one, Niko Tsattalios, has already been rewarded with a contract.

“This (hosting trialists) is always an interesting and exciting experience that is very much part of the football season,” head coach Ricki Herbert said.

“With the season not kicking off till October I am not rushing things when it comes to signings.

“We-ve had a number of lads on trial and more will be coming in to training over the next few weeks.

“Niko (Tsattalios) has been taken on board and there are still some key areas to be filled.

“I would hope to have those areas covered by the end of August.

“There will always be speculation over possible signings, but the club looks forward to confirming new contracted players as soon as possible.”
