Academy Roundup – Week 2

The Wellington Phoenix academy have continued their strong start to the season, with three wins out of four during the weekend’s action.

In the Dettol Central League, the Phoenix men’s reserves went top of the table with a comfortable 5-1 win away to Island Bay.

Ryan Watson, Luke Mitchell, and Jack Perniskie all scored for a second consecutive game, while Luke Flowerdew and Daniel Makowem each bagged their first goals of the season.

The Phoenix U-18 women’s side also sit in first place in the Women’s Central League after routing Palmerston North United on the road 12-0.

Katie Pugh’s hattrick was the highlight, with Maisy McDonald, Anahera Easton, Eliza Vincent and Phoebe Hawes also grabbing braces and Bridie Christie netting once.

An early strike from Riley Allison was not enough for the Wellington Phoenix U-18 men to beat Island Bay reserves in the Capital Premier division, as a late goal ensured a 2-1 loss.

But the U-16 boys’ team were on the right side of a comeback in Capital 1, Ben Law’s 83rd minute winner securing a 3-2 victory over Stop Out.

Grayson Lunman and Ben Trenberth were the other two Phoenix scorers in that match.

This week, all four academy sides play at home, with the men’s reserves hosting Napier City Rovers, and the U-18 women’s side facing Taradale AFC.

The U-18 men also play Western Suburbs and the U-16 boys come up against Stokes Valley.
