Marisa van der Meer joined the Phoenix for the 2022-23 Liberty A-League season from Melbourne City.

The versatile defender established herself as a regular in the Nix starting XI after only featuring nine times as a substitute for City.

Van der Meer is another player to come through the all-conquering Canterbury United Pride team.

She was also a key member of the history-making Young Football Ferns team that returned with a bronze medal from the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The physiotherapy student was part of the Football Ferns squad at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics but has yet to make her senior bow.

Van der Meer started all three of the Junior Football Ferns’ matches at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

> 2022-23 season

Marisa van der Meer started 17 of the team’s 18 matches, only sitting out the team’s penultimate match against Adelaide United, and was substituted just four times.

Van der Meer started the season at fullback, playing on both the left and right in the opening weeks, before finding a home at centre back, where she played for the majority of the season.

She scored three headers from Michaela Foster corners against Western United, Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets to finish first equal in the league with headed goals.

Van der Meer also finished fourth in the competition in aerial duels won and seventh in interceptions.

Marisa van der Meer signed a one-year contract extension with the Phoenix in June and played for Auckland United in the off-season.
