Corban Piper

Corban Piper has quickly established himself as a Phoenix fan favourite since a successful trial with the club on the eve of the 2024-25 season.

The versatile defender, who played most outfield positions in his maiden season as a professional, joined the Phoenix on a scholarship contract from Birkenhead United where he was an integral member of the side which finished fourth in the 2024 Northern League.

Piper grew up on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, north of Auckland and played his junior football for Hibiscus Coast AFC before joining Birkenhead.

He spent 2023 playing for Wexford FC in the League of Ireland first division, making 35 appearances and helping Weford to a fourth place finish

Piper returned to Birkenhead at the start of 2024 and scored seven goals in the team’s first eight Northern League matches playing as a 10.

Originally signed as a centre back, Corban Piper also went on to play as a fullback, central midfielder, winger and striker in his first season as a professional, endearing himself to fans with his tireless work-rate.

Piper made 22 A-League appearances, 15 of which were starts, and scored three goals; finding the back of the net against Adelaide United, Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory at Sky Stadium.

He signed a two-year contract extension with the Phoenix in April.

“The Phoenix gave me my first taste of professional football and I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” Piper said.

“I get along with the boys really well and can’t wait for the next two years.

“Over the upcoming seasons I’m going to develop myself technically and hopefully become the polished player that Chiefy wants me to be.”

Piper was named the members’ under-23 player of the year at the club’s awards night in May.
