The Wellington Phoenix draw for the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season has been announced by the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) today, with the season kicking off on October 13 at the Club-s home ground of Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

With 13 home games in the 2013/14 season, five of these will be played on a Saturday with the remaining eight on Sundays. The first and last games of the round robin competition will be played at Westpac Stadium.

General Manager David Dome is pleased with the result of what has been a collaborative process with the FFA and Australian broadcaster Fox Sports.

“This is a complex draw with a number of pressures on it. We have listened to fan feedback on their support of the Wellington home base and preference for Saturday games, and so are delighted to be able to act on these.

“We are in a unique situation in that the FIFA International windows have an impact on the Club with player-s being selected for National honour with the All Whites. This will impact our first game which is disappointing, however we are pleased that we have come to agreement with the FFA to not play in the November All Whites qualifier window. That game is an away game against Central Coast and will be rescheduled to December”.

The draw announcement caps off an exciting week for the Club with the A-League-s most successful Coach, Ernie Merrick being announced as new Head Coach of the Club through the next two seasons at least.

“Ernie is aware of the challenges that the Phoenix face in terms of players during international windows and he is making plans accordingly” Dome says.

There is still a small amount of finalisation to be done around three of the Club-s home games, with games yet to be confirmed at Westpac Stadium or at venues outside of Wellington.

Dome is thrilled with the interest from venues interested in hosting the Club-s games in the future.
“We are working with several venues around potential competition and pre-season games. While the home ground of the Wellington Phoenix is Westpac Stadium, we do have a number of supporters outside of the city and this interest is testament to this.”
