Wellington Phoenix will face their first pre-season test against Wairarapa United as they head over the Remutakas for the annual friendly match at Trusthouse Memorial Park in Masterton.

The club have a tradition of travelling to Wairarapa for the pre-season fixture, providing a chance for locals to see their heroes ahead of the Hyundai A-League season, with last year’s pre-season game being played in front of over 1800 fans.

Former Wellington Phoenix striker, Paul Ifill has been instrumental in facilitating the annual friendly, having been a constant within the Wairarapa footballing community since leaving the Phoenix in 2014.

With the friendly fixture taking place two weeks ahead of the FFA Cup Round of 32, Head Coach Ufuk Talay is looking forward to coming up against his first opposition.

‘‘It’s still very early in pre-season to judge the players but it’s always a good indication of the progress we are making.

‘‘Wairarapa are already well into their season so they’ll give us a good run out but it’s also a perfect opportunity to mix with fans from outside Wellington.’’

The match will be played on Wednesday 24 July, with an autograph signing session to follow the match.
