Smeltz cleared to play for Wellington Phoenix in Perth

All Whites striker Shane Smeltz’s international transfer has been completed and he will be available for selection in tonight’s Hyundai A-League game against Perth Glory at nib Stadium.

Phoenix Football Operations manager Shaun Gill said the cooperation of New Zealand Football, the Malaysian Football Association and Football Federation Australia had seen the transfer completed quickly.

Phoenix coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre are delighted there were no hold ups with the transfer.

“To have a player of Shane’s quality added to the squad at this point in the season is a real boost,” Head Coach Buckingham said.

“It gives us another option up front which is important as we aim for the playoffs.

“Hamish Watson has done a good job for us in recent weeks and will continue to be an important part of the squad, while Shane adds tremendous experience to the line-up.”

After taking on the Glory in Perth Phoenix have got three exciting home games in just eight days at Westpac in January! The Nix face Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar.

Up next at Westpac, we take on Central Coast Mariners on Saturday 14 January, kick-off 7.35pm. Tickets here.
