WELLINGTON Phoenix memberships have surged past last season-s figure, with 2650 people signing up for the capital club-s second season in the Hyundai A-League.
A total of 2561 members backed the Phoenix in season one and the breaking of that mark indicates strong and growing interest in the capital club-s second shot in the competition.
Following on from the Phoenix-s promising early build-up, including Sunday-s 1-0 win against reigning Hyundai A-League premiers the Central Coast Mariners in a 2008 Pre-Season Cup clash at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, the new membership mark is yet another fillip for the club.
Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata was rapt with the early response to season memberships.
“We-re very happy with the support we-ve had from season ticket-holders. There-s a bit of a way to go to 5000, which is our target, but overall to be in this position so early in the scheme of things is great.”
Pignata urged people still considering throwing their support behind the Phoenix to get onboard sooner rather than later.
“People who sign on before the season starts are going to enjoy all the benefits of membership, particularly the significant savings on standard ticket prices. It also means you-re own assured of your own reserved seat for all 11 home games and you avoid the queues on match-day.
“Plus, you-re supporting the club, and we want all the support we can get in our second season.”
The club has introduced new “benchwarmer” memberships for out-of-town supporters and has been working closely with Ticketek to ensure the membership purchasing process is as simple and smooth as possible.
“We want people to feel a part of something special. This year-s theme – ‘rise as one- – is indicative of our ambitions. Players, coachers, management, members – we-re all part of one club.”
