Phoenix memberships on the rise

WELLINGTON Phoenix memberships have passed the 2000-mark less than a week after going on sale to the general public.

With seven weeks until the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season kicks off, the Phoenix are on track to smash the membership figure achieved in their first season, when 2561 people got behind the new club.

The club-s existing members enjoyed a special two-week window to renew their support before new members were given the chance to sign on for the Phoenix-s 11-game home season at Westpac Stadium, which begins when the capital club takes on Queensland Roar on Sunday, August 17.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the early response from existing and new Wellington Phoenix members had been very encouraging.

“As the start of the season draws closer and interest builds throughout the 2008 Pre-Season Cup competition, we-re confident of reaching our membership target figure of 5000.

“Members form the backbone of any club and are critical to success. A membership base of 5000 would put us on a par with most of our fellow clubs in Australia and we-re delighted with the response this far out from the start of what promises to be a hugely exciting season for us.”

Season membership delivered significant benefits that went beyond simply enjoying big savings on ticket prices at the gate on match-days.

“As well as generating income for the club and ensuring long-term stability, membership allows people to truly become part of the organisation – a sense of pride and ownership. When you become a member you-re involved in something special.

“It-s clear, given the early interest in memberships for season two, that people have taken the Wellington Phoenix to heart.”

Meanwhile, with a 21-man squad in place the Phoenix are now stepping up preparations for their second tilt in the Hyundai A-League.

The club has two training matches coming up before heading south to Christchurch on July 11 for a special five-day visit. While in the Garden City the Phoenix will play a Mainland Selection XI at QEII Park on July 12 as well as host clinics for the region-s elite football coaches and players. The visitors will also be the guests of honour at a fundraising gala dinner staged by Mainland Football.

On Sunday, July 20, the Phoenix begin their 2008 Pre-Season Cup campaign against the Central Coast Mariners at Westpac Stadium. The July 20 clash will possibly be fans- only chance to see a full-strength Phoenix squad in action before the Hyundai A-League 2008/08 competition season kicks off against the Roar on August 17.

Tickets for the Phoenix-Mariners 2008 Pre-Season Cup match can only be pre-purchased at the Wellington Phoenix club store on the corner of Cuba and Dixon streets in the city. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for children.
