Nix sign international captain

The Wellington Phoenix have made an exciting signing in wingback Lucía León as their first new player for the 2025-26 Liberty A-League Women season.

The Dominican Republic captain, 27, spent last campaign at Adelaide United and has previously featured for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, and Real Betis.

Interim Phoenix head coach Amy Shepherd is confident León will make a major impact in Wellington.

“A proven talent in the A-League Women, Lucía brings a wealth of international experience, having played in Spain’s Liga F, England’s Women’s Super League, and more recently here in Australia,” Shepherd said.

“With standout statistics in her position, Lucía’s ability to take on players in 1v1 situations and contribute to the scoreline—either by scoring or assisting—makes her a highly valued asset.

“As captain of her national team, Lucía’s leadership extends beyond the field, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Phoenix whanau.”

Moving across the ditch was a “spontaneous” choice for León.

“The A-League is very cool, a well-organised league, a good competition that is still growing.

“The opportunity for New Zealand came through, and we made the decision to stay in the league.”

She believes she can bring a lot to the Nix, particularly with her international experience.

“Even though I’m classified as a defender, I would describe myself as aggressive going forward. I’ve always tried to do stuff that is exciting for the crowd.

“I’ve played in a wingback position with a lot of freedom to attack, to explore. I’m a creative player, so I try to read the game, be more strategic and use my technique.

“Representing the Dominican Republic is an honour for me. It’s something that I also try to bring to my club, and hopefully everyone gets to know a little more of my roots.

“I’m excited to bring that cultural side to the team. I’m just excited to meet everyone, the fans as well.”

Having scored a brace against the Phoenix at Porirua Park last year, León is excited to now have the Yellow Fever on her side.

“When we were playing at Porirua Park, the fans were quite intimidating.

“Every time the Phoenix were attacking, when they scored, it was very loud. It was against us at the time, but now it’ll be an extra push.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of our fans.”

Lucía León is the 10th Wellington Phoenix women’s player contracted for the 2025-26 Liberty A-League season, with discussions continuing with other off-contract players.
