National League roundup

Another fantastic weekend in the Youth National League, as both boys’ and girls’ sides picked up important wins.

The U17 boys’ side followed up their big win against Petone from last week by hammering FC Western 8-1 on Saturday.

It was another excellent attacking performance, with seven different players getting on the scoresheet.

Oliver Grosso set the tone by opening the scoring just four minutes in, before Luqman Ibrahim, Jack Perniskie, and Grosso again combined to make it 4-0 at half-time.

Despite an FC Western goal early in the second half, the Nix continued to dominate.

Phillip Azevedo, Alessandro Marchesse, Kyle Koch, and Harrison Kowalczyk all netted, ensuring an emphatic victory.

Next, they travel to Memorial Park to play Palmerston North United in a 1pm game on Saturday, 28 September.

The U17 girls also opened their campaign with a victory, although a much tighter one.

Having made the trip to Riverhills to take on Fencibles United in Auckland, it took a substitute to make the breakthrough for the Nix.

Bridie Christie came on at half-time and scored an 80th minute winner, securing a 1-0 win and all three points.

They will hit the road again for their round 2 match, taking on Canterbury Pride Youth at 3pm on Saturday, 28 September at English Park.

The senior National Leagues begin this weekend as well.

In the men’s National League, the Phoenix reserves kick off the season against Eastern Suburbs at Fraser Park at 12.30pm on Saturday, 28 September.

Meanwhile, the women’s reserves have an away day to Christchurch, where they will face the Canterbury United Pride at 12pm on Saturday, 28 September.

All senior National League games will be streamed live and free on FIFA+.
