Lia signs on for another 2 years

TALENTED young midfielder Vince Lia as re-signed with Wellington Phoenix FC for a further two years.

TALENTED young midfielder Vince Lia has re-signed with Wellington Phoenix FC for a further two years.

The 22-year-old joined the Phoenix for their inaugural season in the Hyundai A-League after two seasons in Melbourne, where he made 24 appearances for the Victory. He struggled with injury early in the season but went on to be one of the Phoenix-s star performers in his 13 matches for the new club.

Wellington Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata was thrilled to have secured the services of the former Australia under-17, under-20 and under-23 representative for two more years.

“We-re happy that Vince has agreed to stay on. He-s a young Socceroo – he-s played at under-17 and under-20 World Cups and captained the under-20s – so he-s got a great pedigree.

“He has struggled with injury but when he did get fit last season he was a very good member of the team and we-re looking forward to big things from him in season two.”

Pignata said Lia-s versatility meant he was a major asset for the Phoenix.

“Having utility players in a squad is what-s required and Vince can fit that bill, whether it-s playing in the midfield, out wide or even at right back. Speaking with [head coach] Ricki Herbert, we-re of the opinion we can utilise him in a variety of roles, so he-s a great acquisition and will make a valuable contribution.”

Lia said signing with the Phoenix had been a great move for him.

“It gave me the opportunity to play more football and it-s great to be part of a new club that-s really heading in the right direction. I-m happy to call Wellington home for the next two seasons at the very least.”
