Fraser one of five Nix called up to the Football Ferns

Macey Fraser has been named in the Football Ferns for the first time.

The inform midfielder is one of five Wellington Phoenix players called up to New Zealand’s squad for their upcoming internationals in Colombia.

Fraser, 21, has caught the eye of Ferns head coach Jitka Klimková after scoring two goals in her first five A-League matches, including a stunning free-kick against Western United in round four.

Combative centre back Mackenzie Barry has been recalled to the Ferns after last featuring for New Zealand in April, while versatile defenders Michaela Foster and Kate Taylor, and uncapped goalkeeper Brianna Edwards have kept their places in the squad after heading to Chile in late September.

Decorated midfielder Annalie Longo has made herself unavailable for the tour while she returns to full fitness having missed the start of the Liberty A-League season with injury.

Grace Wisnewski also travelled to South America with the New Zealand squad in September, but wasn’t considered for selection this time around after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee against Brisbane Roar.

The Football Ferns will play two matches against Colombia in Bogotá. The first match is on Saturday, December 2 at 4pm (10am, Sunday December 3 NZT), with the second international on Tuesday, December 5 at 3pm (9am, Wednesday December 6 NZT).

The Wellington Phoenix will return after the international break with a match against Melbourne Victory at Porirua Park on Sunday, December 10.

The quintet will travel to Colombia after the Macca’s Festival of Football on Saturday, when the Phoenix men and women will play at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart. Tickets are available now!
