The football fraternity has paid tribute to one of the men responsible for the rise of the Wellington Phoenix.

A short tribute was held at David Farrington Park in Miramar on Saturday to remember and recall the rich life of Ian Wells, 76, who died in January after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago.

The ceremony was held before the kick-off in Team Wellington’s ASB Premiership semi-final second leg tie with Hawke’s Bay United. Team Wellington rose to the occasion to win 1-0 and progress to the final.

A plaque outlining Mr Wells’ many achievements was unveiled and will become a permanent feature at the ground.
