Date confirmed for round of 16 Australia Cup tie

The Wellington Phoenix will travel to Victoria next week to play Melbourne City in the last 16 of the Australia Cup.

Football Australia has announced the round of 16 tie will be played at Jack Edwards Reserve in south-west Melbourne on Sunday, August 27 – the second of four matchdays.

Jack Edwards Reserve is the home of Victoria National Premier Leagues (NPL) club Oakleigh Cannons, who City beat 3-2 in the round of 32 earlier this month, courtesy of a stoppage time winner from Alessandro Lopane.

It is the third straight season the Wellington Phoenix have drawn Melbourne City in the Australia Cup.

The Phoenix memorably beat City on penalties in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Cup and prevailed 2-1 in the round of 16 last year.

The Nix secured their place in the last 16 by overcoming Queensland NPL side Peninsula Power 2-1, with Josh Rudland scoring the match winner in the penultimate minute of extra time.
