Big Phoenix presence in NZ U-17 World Cup squad

Seven Wellington Phoenix players have been named in the New Zealand squad for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Men’s World Cup in Indonesia.

First team squad member Luke Supyk headlines the Phoenix contingent from the club’s academy.

Supyk has recently graduated to the professional ranks, all after being the top goal scorer at the OFC U-17 Championship in January.

Fellow forward Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues, goalkeeper Eamonn McCarron, defenders Jesper Edwards and Athan Thompson, and midfielders Anaru Cassidy and Paris Domfeh have also secured selection in New Zealand’s World Cup squad.

Sloane-Rodrigues has been a regular for the Phoenix reserves in this year’s National League Championship, while Cassidy and Edwards are also part of Chris Greenacre’s wider squad.

New Zealand will assemble in Jakarta later this week for a training camp before heading to Bandung in West Java, where they will play all of their group matches.

The Young All Whites will play Venezuela in their opening game on Sunday, November 12 (10pm NZT), before playing Germany on Wednesday, November 15 (1am Thursday NZT) and Mexico on Saturday, November 18 (10 NZT).
