Wellington Phoenix are pleased to announce the signing of experienced defender Luke DeVere.
The 29 year old defender joins Wellington on a one year deal.
Having progressed through the FFA Centre of Excellence, the centre back joined Brisbane Roar for the beginning of the 2008/09 Hyundai A-League season, cementing a first team position.
DeVere was the Roar’s Player of the Year in his second year after his performances in the 2009/10 Hyundai A-League season as well as being included in the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 PFA Team of the Year.
After 65 appearances and three goals, DeVere left for K-League side Gyeongnam FC.
He went on to make 78 appearances over four seasons in Korea, scoring six goals in the process.
Following the end of his contract with the K-League club, DeVere re-signed with the Roar, making another 45 appearances and scoring two goals.
DeVere started his international career for Australia in 2007 with the U20s, with his full senior Socceroos debut coming in a friendly game against Germany in 2015, where he helped his side to 2-2 draw against the World Champions.
The Australian centre back is excited by the idea of beginning a new chapter in his career.
“This new challenge in Wellington represents a really exciting opportunity for me.
“It’s easy to continue playing in an environment you feel comfortable in but I feel that I always rise to a new challenge and I’m looking forward to beginning this journey in Wellington.”
Head Coach, Ufuk Talay has praised DeVere’s career so far, but believes he still has plenty to offer.
‘‘Luke is a highly experienced defender in this competition so his knowledge and attitude will be crucial as we look to progress on from next season.
“At only 29, Luke is one of the most accomplished centre backs in the League will no doubt be a huge asset here in Wellington.”
DeVere will travel to Wellington in late June as preparations for pre-season take place.
