Academy Roundup – Week 5

A busy weekend for the Wellington Phoenix academy.

In the Dettol Central League, the men’s reserves were held to a 2-2 draw by Petone FC.

Luke Supyk’s smart finish and Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues’ long-range stunner had put the Phoenix ahead after going behind early, but an injury-time equaliser ensured that the ten-man Nix would have to share the points.

The U18 women’s side also kept their unbeaten streak alive in the Central League against Petone, with the game finishing 0-0.

The women’s reserves began their season with a win, beating Waterside Karori 4-2 with Amber de Wit, Phoebe Hawes, Isla Cleall-Harding, and Grace Bartlett all getting on the scoresheet.

There was another goalless draw for the U16 girls, who had a stalemate against Waterside Karori.

In the Capital 1 division, Willem Des Tombe’s double led the U16 boys to a 4-2 victory over Seatoun AFC. Grayson Lunman and Ben Trenberth rounded out the scoring.

There was also a big win for the U15 boys, triumphing 5-1 over Wellington Olympic. Charlie Farac scored twice, with Vasilios Kastrinakis, Jack Clegg, and Harry Grosso adding the extras.

Finally, the U14 boys made the perfect start to their campaign, hammering Petone 8-0.

Tristan Bancroft grabbed a hattrick, with Caleb Brown nabbing a brace for himself. The other goalscorers were Max Mangos, Kieran McMahon, and Harper Norman.

This weekend, the men’s reserves travel to Wellington Olympic, as do the men’s U18 and boys U16 sides.

The women’s U18 team have a road trip north to play Palmerston North Marist, while the women’s reserves face Onslow/North Wellington away as part of a double header with the U16 girls.

The boys U16 team also play Olympic, the boys U15 side have Western Suburbs away and the U14 boys have a bye.
