Academy players make first team debuts in Australia Cup

Last night’s Australia Cup Round of 32 match saw three current Phoenix men’s reserves players and one academy graduate make their club debuts.

Goalkeeper Alby Kelly-Heald, who signed a scholarship contract earlier this year started in goal for the Phoenix men in their 1-0 defeat to South Melbourne last night.

Academy player Nathan Walker also started last night, after spending one season with the reserves. Walker joined the Academy from Fencibles United after impressing at last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup.

Tze Xuan Loke and Lachlan Candy also made their debuts after coming off the bench in the 77th minute.

The squad also featured Academy players Dylan Gardiner and Dublin Boon who were both unused subs for the match.

Alongside the four debutants, a further eight players who featured in last night’s match have come through the Academy pathway.

Forwards, Luke Supyk and Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues both started in last night’s match, alongside winger Oskar van Hattum, midfielder Fin Conchie and defenders Lukas Kelly-Heald, Isaac Hughes and Matt Sheridan.

Academy midfielder Fergus Gillion, who made his debut last season came off the bench in the 67th minute.
