Six members of the Wellington Phoenix Academy have their sights set on next year’s Fifa under-17s World Cup in India.
Logan Rogerson and James McGarry, now contracted professionals at the Phoenix, Sarpreet Singh, Joe Bell and Jack-Henry Sinclair were the club’s representatives at the last world event and Academy coach Paul Temple is confident of being well represented next time around.
Six Academy players recently attended a national training camp in Auckland recently and Phoenix Academy coach Paul Temple said they acquitted themselves well.
The players who performed well at the camp are Ollie Whyte (centre midfield), Jake William (left back), Liam Moore (centre back), Liberato Cacace (defensive midfield), Sam Sutton (centre midfield) and Willem Ebbinge (striker).
The youngsters train four times a week with Temple while continuing with their studies and playing for the Phoenix’ Central League side or the club’s under-17 team which hasn’t lost a game this season.
“They all did well in the camp and all have played some reserve team football this year,” Temple said.
“Some have started games while others have been used as substitutes and it has been really good for them.
“They are good kids who have good application at training and show their quality week in week out and have a down-to-earth mentality.”
The Phoenix Academy is holding a Talent ID camp in Auckland on July 11, 12 and 13 and already have 77 youngsters registered to attend.
