Nix give young midfielder a chance to prove himself

The Wellington Phoenix have shown faith in Fin Roa Conchie by re-signing the young midfielder for the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Roa Conchie, 22, has made 34 appearances for the Phoenix over the past three A-League seasons after graduating from the club’s academy.

He has represented New Zealand at age-group and senior level, but not in the past two years.

Phoenix head coach Chris Greenacre wants to help Roa Conchie realise his potential.

“It’s a big season for Conch and he deserves the opportunity to showcase what he can do,” Greenacre said.

“Three years ago he represented New Zealand at the under-20 World Cup in Argentina and he showed the calibre of midfielder he can be.

“In recent times Conch has played out of position and we haven’t seen the best of him. But I know there’s a quality footballer in there.

“It’s up to him to make the most of this opportunity and I know he’s really hungry to show people what he can do.”

Fin Roa Conchie says the past three seasons have been a big learning curve and he’s grateful the club has shown faith in him.

“It means a lot to me,” Roa Conchie said. “The Phoenix have been an important part of my journey as an individual.

“This also allows me to have another season to give back to the club.

“I really want to help the Phoenix win games and get back to where we were a couple of seasons ago playing finals football.

“And I want to play an important role in doing that.”

Roa Conchie is looking forward to playing a full season under Greenacre, who he was coached by at the academy.

“I’m excited because I have a coach who has a system that suits me and who knows me as a person and a player.

“Greeny knows how to get the best out of me so it gives me a lot of confidence.

“I know what’s expected of me on and off the pitch and as an ex-player Greeny’s got a lot of wisdom to pass on.”

He’s also excited about playing exclusively as a defensive midfielder, having often played in a more attacking role last season.

“I’m incredibly determined to get back to playing as a six. That’s where I believe I can be most valuable to the team and really show how good of a player I am.

“It’s about showing my range of passing, being a physical player, winning the ball back for the team and all the little things the position requires.

“I’m really looking forward to it and I’m getting myself prepared to play as a six.”

Fin Roa Conchie is the 17th men’s player contracted to the Wellington Phoenix for the 2026-27 A-League with the squad to assemble for pre-season training next month.
