Players representing Capital Football in the National Federation Talent Tournament this weekend have an extra incentive to play at their best.
The Wellington Phoenix is pleased to announce that one Capital Football Federation Talent Centre (FTC) player will receive a full scholarship for the Phoenix Football Academy.
Richard Reid, Chief Executive of Capital Football said “we-re pleased to take another step in strengthening our relationship with the Wellington Phoenix, where the outcome directly benefits our local youth players. Wellington is unique with the Phoenix based here in our neighbourhood, so it-s great see a local footballer have the chance to be fully involved in a top academy, without cost being a barrier.”
General Manager of the Wellington Phoenix, David Dome, agrees. “We believe the Phoenix Football Academy will give talented youngsters the best possible chance to become professional footballers. Working with Capital Football is a positive move forward; they are already working with the players so it is logical to have a coordinated and integrated approach in this area.”
The Academy is a joint venture with the Asia Pacific Football Academy (APFA), and is targeted at students aged 13-17. It will initially be based at Scots College, Wellington, and the programme encompasses training and development similar to that as the senior team, including strength and conditioning, nutrition, analysis and mental preparation programmes. Wellington Phoenix Head Coach Ernie Merrick will have overall control of player development.
Wellington Phoenix coaching staff will work with Capital Football-s Football Development staff to help select the recipient of the football scholarship.
