Wellington Phoenix Match Melbourne Victory in Tight Draw

Thumbnail

It was end to end football in the late Friday kick off in Melbourne as Mark Rudan’s men faced off against second-placed Melbourne Victory.

Both teams were looking to release their attacking talent in behind as the first half an hour went back and forth between the two boxes although Wellington Phoenix were the better side.

David Williams was the only change in the starting side, his rocket against Brisbane Roar the reason behind his selection and it wasn’t long before he was involved.

Wellington Phoenix enjoyed the best chances of the first half as Mandi went narrowly wide with his free-kick before Williams played Sarpreet Singh in on goal but Lawrence Thomas was wise to it and smothered the opportunity to take the early lead.

Not long into the second half and Williams drove at the Victory backline, cut inside and unleashed a rocket beyond Thomas, giving his side the lead.

Victory took it to Wellington Phoenix but Captain, Andrew Durante and defender Steven Taylor were on fine form and allowed them few chances on goal.

However, Ola Toivonen kept pressing at the backline and found himself in a dangerous position as Terry Antonis’ mis-hit found him as he tapped it beyond Filip Kurto to equalise.

As the game drew to an end, both teams defended resolutely as the shares were spoiled.
