Wellington Phoenix are happy to announce that Goalkeeper, Oliver Sail, has agreed a two-year contract extension until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2020/21 season.

The 23-year old from Auckland first signed with the Reserves team back September 2014 before signing his first senior professional contact with the club in March 2017.

Sail has played seven games for the Hyundai A-League side, with three of those appearances occurring earlier this season.

His performances against Perth Glory, Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets have not gone unnoticed, specifically against the latter where he was lauded for his athleticism and shot stopping, after pulling off a string of world-class saves.

Goalkeeper, Sail is extremely happy to have signed an extension and believes it is an exciting time to be associated with the club.

“Being a New Zealander, you always want to represent your home club and to be able to do that for a further two-years is really exciting.

“We are building something special at the club and I believe it will continue to improve so I’m very happy to be a part of it.”

Under the stewardship of goalkeeper coach, Paul Gothard, the Number 20 has gone from strength to strength this season.

“Working closely with Paul Gothard and Filip Kurto has helped my game rise to another level and I believe my performances this season have reflected that.

Goalkeeper Coach, Paul Gothard, is extremely happy with Sail’s progression and knows he is pushing for that number one spot, on a daily basis.

“He has been fantastic all season and a great professional.

“It’s very rare to have a number two of similar quality to your first choice so he’s constantly pushing Kurto.

“When Kurto hasn’t been available, we’ve had Oli come in and perform magnificently with his performances this season.

“He is going to be a big part of the team moving forward.”

Sail is in the squad that travels to Adelaide United this weekend, as they push for a Hyundai A-League final at home.
