Wellington Phoenix academy roundup

The Wellington Phoenix academy finished their year by competing in two tournaments over the last week.

Academy sides were involved in both the annual Western Springs U17 competition and for the first time, the National Youth Futsal championships.

At the Western Springs tournament in Auckland, the U17 Wellington Phoenix girls backed up their youth National League victory by securing another trophy.

In the final, Isla Cleall-Harding and Maisie McDonald scored in a 2-1 win over Fencibles United, while Grace Bartlett was named as the most valuable player of the tournament.

The U17 boys team was unable to replicate their own youth National League success, losing 5-4 to Northland FC in the plate quarterfinal.

The National Youth Futsal championships saw three Nix teams involved at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre in Wellington, with U15 girls, U15 boys, and U17 girls sides all entered.

The U15 boys made the final and nearly won, going down 7-6 to Auckland City in a hotly contested game.

Shaina-Nashe Marahwa scored twice in the final, and was awarded the golden boot after scoring eleven goals overall during the tournament.

The U15 girls also came close, finishing third after beating Bay of Plenty in the third place playoff. The U17 boys finished sixth in their bracket.
