A mixed weekend for the Wellington Phoenix in the National League, with a win and a loss across their two matches.
The Phoenix men’s reserves travelled to Christchurch to play Cashmere Technical, who were top of the table after the first round.
An emphatic second half performance saw the Nix run out 4-0 winners after going into halftime scoreless.
Luke Supyk stayed composed to open the scoring on the hour mark, before Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues jinked into the area and calmly finished five minutes later.
Cashmere Technical could not recover from the double strike, and Nathan Walker soon added a third in the aftermath of a corner.
In injury time, Luke Flowerdew finished the scoring by rounding the keeper and smartly slotting home from a tight angle.
The win moves them to fourth on the table, and they will take on second placed Napier City Rovers next Sunday in another away game.
The women’s reserves faced a tougher assignment on Friday night, facing Waterside Karori while missing a large contingent of players to both the first team and the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad.
A 5-0 defeat was the final result, although the second half saw a major improvement after being four goals down at the break.
The match saw a number of National League debuts, and the Nix closed the game with an average age of just 16.6.
They will regroup for another Friday night match, this time away to fifth placed Wellington United.
In the youth National League, the U-18 girls’ team won yet again, beating Capital Football 5-0.
Goals were scored by Isabella Temple, Bridie Christie, and Jasmine Shailer, with a brace for Lucie Wells.
The boys’ youth side had a bye this weekend.
