International call-up for León

Lucía León is the eighth Wellington Phoenix player selected to take part in upcoming qualifiers for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

The versatile Phoenix forward has been called up to the Dominican Republic national team for their CONCACAF qualifying matches against Belize and Anguilla.

León has played for the Dominican Republic national team since 2021 and is one of the side’s leaders.

Her selection comes after Phoenix teammates Grace Jale, Victoria Esson, Mackenzie Barry, Emma Pijnenburg, Manaia Elliott, Lara Wall and Pia Vlok were named in the Football Ferns for their upcoming Oceania qualifiers in the Solomon Islands.

The Dominican Republic will play host to Belize on Saturday, February 28 before visiting Anguilla on Friday, March 6.

León will travel to the Caribbean after the Phoenix’s round 18 Ninja A-League match against the Victory in Melbourne on Friday night before returning to Wellington the week of the team’s round 19 game against Brisbane Roar after the international window.
