Football For All in running for community award

Football For All has been recognised by the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

The programme, which was launched in June 2020, is one of 28 initiatives from across the Wellington region that are in contention for the organisation’s People’s Choice Award.

The winning community group will receive $2,000 cash and $10,000 digital advertising at Wellington Airport.

The Football For All programme is targeted at refugee families and recent immigrants to the Wellington region – with the aim of fostering inclusivity, participation and well-being by using football as a vehicle to help specific communities who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience and engage with sport.

Facilitated by Football For the Community Development Trust (FCDT) and primarily funded by the Lloyd Morrison Trust, the initiative covers the costs of children aged between five and 17 from ethnic communities to play football at their local football club.

More than 100 young people from refugee and recent immigrant families took part in the programme in 2021 and played football at their local club in the winter season. All costs were covered including subscription fees, playing strips, boots and transport to and from trainings and games.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award is due to be announced early next month.
