A group of Karori kids took it upon themselves to challenge some football stars from the Wellington Phoenix to a game of street-ball on Saturday.
Young players Coran Perks, Nicholas Dalziel, Hannah McKenzie, Ciaran Lynch, Jacob Madigan, Jago Sperring and Jamie Toplis from the Waterside Karori club drew ‘oooh-s and ahhhs- from the crowd down Cuba Street as they showcased their talent and tricks on their way to a 3-2 victory against Phoenix players Alex Rufer, Josh Brindell-South, Roy Krishna and new-recruit Hamish Watson.
Assistant coach Chris Greenacre had a busy day too with whistle-in-mouth as he awarded a last-minute penalty to the Karori youngsters which proved to be the winning of the match.
Waterside Karori had the idea at an end-of-season junior dinner and began working with Wellington Phoenix-s Community Development Officer Rachel Martelli in the New Year to get plans off-the-ground.
The initiative, supported by the crew at the Wellington Phoenix, was all about making sure the kids in Karori and the Western Suburbs sign up to play football for the 2014 season.
It also provided a great opportunity to get the word out about their charity-strip match against the Melbourne Heart on Sunday which, despite the result not going their way, gave a great helping hand raising funds for Surf Life Saving New Zealand.
