Ifill hopeful of quick return

WELLINGTON Phoenix striker Paul Ifill may yet play a part in the remainder of the Phoenix’s Hyundai A-League 2010/11 campaign after a scan today confirmed he had not sustained major damage to his left leg after falling awkwardly in his side 4-0 win against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

WELLINGTON Phoenix striker Paul Ifill may yet play a part in the remainder of the Phoenix-s Hyundai A-League 2010/11 campaign after a scan today confirmed he had not sustained major damage to his left leg after falling awkwardly in his side 4-0 win against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

Ifill was stretchered from the Westpac Stadium pitch after suffering the injury in the early stages of the match. Initial x-rays revealed no significant break or fracture to bones just below his left knee and an MRI scan today confirmed Ifill had sustained a high ankle sprain and membrane damage that is likely to keep him out of action for six weeks.

That means the talismanic striker could yet feature for the Phoenix in the closing stages of the regular season and the playoffs should the team qualify.

While disappointed to be forced to the sidelines as the Phoenix shift their campaign into high gear, Ifill was relieved to have not suffered a season-ending injury.

“The specialist has said I-ll be out for six weeks but obviously I-ll be aiming to be back before that. It-s probably better news than I was expecting, to be honest. Hopefully the boys can keep things going well in the meantime and I can come back and play a part during the remainder of the season.”
